Manali Anne Photography » Natural and candid wedding photography for couple, who above all else, are excited about being in love. Oakland based photographer | San Francisco | California

Q + A

q. What kind of photography do you do?

a. I specialize in weddings, and I love photographing natural and candid moments. A wedding brings up so much emotion and excitement and I love capturing those unscripted moments. I also enjoy photographing events and portraits.

q. How long have you been photographing?

a. 15 years. I can’t believe it’s been that long. My life has revolved around photography ever since I started developing my own black and white prints in the high school darkroom. After high school I traveled throughout Europe with my best friend and my camera, where I originally developed my photo-journalistic style. After that amazing experience I had a portfolio which got me into my dream college, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Though I am originally from California so I was eager to resettle on the West Coast as soon as I could, which was in 2010.

q. How long have you been photographing professionally?

a. 6 years. Ever since I moved to San Francisco in 2010 I have been photographing professionally. I have garnered a lot of experience during that time. I photographed over 100 events, weddings and portraits in 2014 alone and have seen just about every lighting situation. I knew I wanted to photograph weddings after my own wedding in 2008, which happened around the same time that I graduated college. The experience of getting my photos back was so special to me that I knew that was what I wanted to do for others.

q. What inspires you to take pictures?

a. I was originally moved by the work I saw that captured the human condition in a raw and unfiltered way. Great photographers like Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, and Josef Koudelka, were very influential as I developed my eye. Though I don’t photograph the same subject matter as they did, I look for the same truth and beauty I find present in their work.

Technical Questions

q. Once we have decided to work with you for our wedding, what should we expect?

a. I will send over a contract to be signed electronically and there will be a deposit due. If we are going to do an engagement session together we’ll start planning for that. I am always available for any questions that may occur to you in the time before the wedding. I encourage couples to reach out to me as they are putting together their timeline to make sure we have enough time to capture the photos they want. I also check in about a month before the wedding to start preparing for the photography portion of the day and arrange a time for a phone call check in. We will talk about the things you are most looking forward to and I’ll have those in my mind as I am photographing during the wedding.

q. What is included with basic coverage?

a. Basic coverage always includes the selected and edited jpegs. I never charge more for your photos after they have been photographed, though some photographers do. They are color corrected, adjusted for exposure and ready to print.

q. Can I pay online?

a. Yes, though I prefer a check. I have to pay the credit card companies 3% of the transaction, which can add up quickly. Rather than raise my rates and offer to always pay the fee, I have decided to split the difference with the client. If a client prefers to pay by credit card I will pay 1.5% and the client will add 1.5% to the total bill.

q. How many photos will I receive?

a. Probably a lot, but I don’t guarantee a certain number. I take many photos since it’s easy to do with digital and since the more photos I take the more it helps me nail that perfect shot I am looking for.

q. What kind of gear do you use?

a. I’m a Canon girl. My first camera was my dad’s Canon from the 70’s and it continued from there. I have two full frame Canon cameras, 10 lenses and 2 flashes. Needless to say I love my gear, but I am also intent on making sure that even in case of equipment failure I am always prepared to photograph those moments that will only happen once.

q. Are you insured?

a. Yup. I can provide a COI to your venue if required.

q. Do you offer albums?

a. Definitely! Albums are precious. In all honesty they are not cheap, the ones I offer take a lot of time to create and are beautifully hand constructed with exceptional materials in California.

q. How long does it take for me to receive my photos?

a. It depends on the event. It usually take 4-8 weeks to turn around the edited wedding photos.
